Assessing Our Health Product Declarations and Material Transparency
OnBoard Newsletter | June 2018
Gaining and maintaining your trust is really at the heart of National Gypsum’s Health Product Declarations (HPDs). HPDs and other declarations reflect our overall, continued pledge to sustainability and material transparency, and we willingly share this information.
Health Product Declarations (HPDs)
You design your projects with occupancy health and indoor air quality issues in mind, and to assist you we have a list of products with HPDs. An HPD identifies a product’s ingredients and health information. The completed report complies with the Health Product Declaration® Open Standard and describes a product used in the built environment. In layman’s terms, an HPD means National Gypsum has taken the time to investigate and disclose the ingredients in our products down to as small as 1,000 parts per million. This transparency helps you make informed, apples-to-apples product comparisons and select the products that best meet each project’s sustainability goals. Other sustainable product information we offer includes third-party indoor environmental quality certifications for low chemical emissions, mold resistance claim validations, material credit compliance, life cycle assessments and hazard screenings of product ingredients.
These product declarations and ingredient inventories provide you (and ultimately your clients) with the confidence that National Gypsum products have been vetted and are safe to use in your projects.
Are You Specifying “Healthy” Products?
The products you specify can affect the long-term health of building occupants. Ask your Construction Design Manager to help you match the right products with your project’s sustainability goals.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

Products with Declare Labels
A Declare label answers three questions:
- Where does a product come from?
- What is it made of?
- Where does it go at the end of its life?
Architects and specifiers value transparency, and the Declare database provides a free resource to help make product selections based on healthy and safe material ingredients. The database is a transparent platform that publishes ingredient disclosure labels – Declare labels – that are easy to read.

When LEED v4 became effective in October 2016, no one knew if the emphasis on manufacturers’ transparency would be embraced by architects, end users and manufacturers. At that time, NGC had no HPDs or EPDs. Today, we have now published Health Product Declarations, an industry-wide Environmental Product Declaration and Declare labels for four products. National Gypsum is committed to transparency."
