Gypsum board is National Gypsum’s primary business. The company has 21 gypsum board
plants strategically located near major markets to offer customers fast, low-cost
delivery. National Gypsum’s board business is fully integrated, with the company
owning its own gypsum and paper supplies.
The company mines and quarries gypsum in Arizona, Texas, Kansas,
Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, and Nova Scotia. Its Nova Scotia quarry is the largest
in the world, producing rock for the company’s plants located along the eastern
seaboard. A single shipload of rock will produce enough gypsum board to complete approximately
6000 homes.
The company’s newest plants use solid waste byproduct gypsum produced when coal-fired
power plants scrub their emissions to remove sulfur dioxide. The byproduct of this
operation is calcium sulfate (gypsum). National Gypsum uses this byproduct, which
would otherwise go to a landfill, to make gypsum board. The company’s Shippingport
Plant (near Pittsburgh), its Apollo Beach Plant (near Tampa), its Westwego Plant (near New Orleans) and its Mt. Holly Plant (near Charlotte), are all byproduct operation plants.
National Gypsum is one of the nation’s largest producers of recycled paper. It operates
four 100-percent recycled paper mills which supply paper for its gypsum board.
National Gypsum’s board line is marketed under its Gold Bond Brand.

Gypsum
NGC owns its gypsum supply, including natural gypsum produced from eight mines and
quarries. NGC also uses byproduct gypsum created when power plants scrub coal-fired
emissions.
Paper
NGC owns four paper mills which supply the facing papers for its gypsum boards. These
mills use recycled paper for feedstock.
Internal Logistics
Seafaring vessels transport rock to plants along the eastern seaboard, the Great
Lakes, and California. A company train moves rock from its Halifax quarry to the
port. NGC’s fleet of semi trucks transport gypsum board in the West.
